NordVPN is challenging a long-standing standard in the VPN industry by questioning the relevance of server count as a key measure of service quality. Instead, the company argues that server performance and reliability should take center stage.
For years, VPN providers have used large server numbers to market their services. Consumers often see this figure as a sign of better coverage and faster speeds. But NordVPN wants to change that mindset.
“The idea that more VPN servers mean better service simply isn’t true,” said Marijus Briedis, Chief Technology Officer at NordVPN, in an interview with TechRadar. “It’s time we talk about what really affects users—speed, reliability, and capacity.”
What Makes a Good VPN Server?
VPN servers are essential to how a VPN works. When users connect, their internet traffic is rerouted through these servers, masking their real IP addresses. While a wide geographic range is helpful for accessing international content, it doesn’t guarantee a smooth experience.
In a blog post, Briedis compared VPN networks to road systems. “More roads don’t fix traffic if they’re poorly maintained or badly designed. What matters is having wide, fast lanes and smart planning,” he wrote.
Briedis believes VPN providers should think more like internet service providers (ISPs). “ISPs don’t talk about the number of servers. They focus on network capacity and connection quality,” he said.
According to NordVPN, the following factors are more important than server quantity:
- Network Capacity: This determines how much data the network can handle. For instance, NordVPN’s servers offer up to 70 Tbps in bandwidth.
- Bandwidth and Load Management: It’s not just about capacity, but how it’s managed. NordVPN keeps server load under 30% to prevent congestion and ensure stable performance.
- Speed and Reliability: These are what users value most. Efficient capacity use and load balancing help maintain fast and consistent connections.
- Geographic Distribution: A well-planned server network ensures smooth global traffic. Strategic locations and robust infrastructure matter more than sheer numbers.
A New Industry Standard?
Server count is easy to communicate and compare, which is why it has remained a popular benchmark. But shifting the focus to server quality could lead to a better understanding of real performance.
Mike Williams, Lead Security Reviewer at TechRadar, said the idea isn’t entirely new. “Server numbers alone don’t tell us much,” he noted. “But I doubt most providers will move away from them soon. Still, Nord deserves credit for starting this conversation.”
Briedis responded to Williams’ comments, emphasizing NordVPN’s quality-first strategy. “Every provider has its own rules, but for us, keeping server load below 30% is key to ensuring high performance for users,” he said.
In conclusion, NordVPN wants the VPN industry to focus more on overall user experience. “This is a critical area where we can truly improve,” Briedis added.
