Security concerns around user data leaks have long affected Apple’s iOS devices. iPhones—and some Mac models—can expose your IP address or send unencrypted data if the service you’re using does not support TLS encryption. This risk increases when the device connects to a dangerous Wi-Fi or Ethernet network controlled by an attacker. Notably, this can happen even when using a VPN.
ExpressVPN is taking action to protect its users from this threat. The company, which works closely with cybersecurity research groups, was recently alerted to the issue and is currently investigating it. A full disclosure is expected soon.
In the meantime, ExpressVPN has already implemented updates to its iOS app to improve user protection. Users can activate additional security features in the app by following a few simple steps.
How to Protect Your Connection
To help prevent leaks, ExpressVPN recommends enabling the Advanced Kill Switch in its iOS app. This feature blocks all internet traffic if the VPN disconnects, preventing any data from being exposed. It also directly addresses the risk of IP and traffic leaks described above.
However, users should be aware that enabling this option might affect some Apple services, such as Personal Hotspot and CarPlay. If needed, users can switch back to the standard kill switch to resolve these issues.
Steps to Enable Advanced Kill Switch:
- Open the ExpressVPN app on your iOS device.
- Tap Profile.
- Tap Internet Kill Switch.
- Tap Advanced Kill Switch > Change Anyway.
Real-Time Alerts for Unsecured Networks
The ExpressVPN app also includes notifications that alert users when they connect to potentially unsafe networks. If you receive a notification that says “Unsecured Wi-Fi detected,” take these steps:
- Tap the notification.
- Tap Disable and reconnect.
If you later decide to re-enable access to devices on your local network, the app will warn you about possible vulnerabilities. ExpressVPN will continue to alert you if any unsecured network is detected.
