The District Magistrate of Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, has ordered a two-month suspension of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) across the district due to concerns over cybersecurity and potential misuse. The directive, issued under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), came into effect on May 7, 2025.
The order highlights that VPNs, which encrypt data, mask IP addresses, and bypass website restrictions, have been used for unlawful activities, including inciting unrest and spreading inflammatory content. Authorities warned that VPN use poses significant cybersecurity risks, as it can compromise sensitive information and make systems vulnerable to cyberattacks.
Fakhrudin Hamid, the District Magistrate of Anantnag, emphasized the immediate suspension of all VPN services on mobile phones within the district. Senior Superintendent of Police, Anantnag, has been tasked with ensuring strict enforcement of the order.
Residents are urged to avoid using VPNs during this period to prevent legal repercussions and to support ongoing efforts to maintain public order and strengthen cybersecurity.
