Proton VPN, long known for its privacy focus, is making strides in catching up with its competitors with a series of significant updates. Over the last year, the VPN service introduced new features, including a revamped user interface, support for Apple TV and Windows Arm, and enhanced anti-censorship tools. As 2025 progresses, Proton VPN is continuing to improve its service, with even more updates planned for the spring and summer.
Key updates will primarily target the iOS and Mac VPN apps, but users of Windows, Android, and Linux will also see improvements.
What’s Coming Next?
One of the standout changes is an upgrade to NetShield, Proton VPN’s threat protection feature. NetShield will gain the ability to detect and block phishing attacks, a major improvement that brings it closer to the capabilities of competitors like NordVPN‘s Threat Protection Pro and Surfshark’s antivirus tools.
Proton VPN is already known for its high streaming speeds and reliability. This spring, it plans to expand its streaming support to more services, fine-tune its speeds, and offer full IPv6 compatibility on Windows, Mac, and iOS.
On the customization front, Proton VPN profiles will allow users to save their custom connection settings for various needs. Android users will also benefit from a light theme option and additional features for Android TV. Moreover, Proton VPN continues to enhance its anti-censorship measures to help users access the VPN even in countries with strong censorship controls.
Looking Ahead to Late 2025
All these updates are set to roll out by the summer of 2025, but Proton VPN is also planning further features by the end of the year. A command-line interface (CLI) will be available for Linux users, and Proton is also working on GUI improvements. Gamers will be happy to know that Proton VPN plans to improve performance for a faster and more responsive gaming experience. Lastly, further enhancements to VPN profiles and new tools to tackle emerging privacy threats will be added.
