Google Fi Renames VPN to “VPN by Google” for All Subscribers

by Shelley

Google Fi subscribers now have a new name for the service previously known as the “Google Fi VPN.” The service is now called “VPN by Google.” This change is purely a rebranding effort to align with Google’s other services, with no changes to the functionality for most Android and iOS users.

For those using the Fi Wireless app, the VPN can still be enabled or disabled as before. The app recently added a new “Plan” tab at the bottom of the screen.

Subscribers with a Pixel 7 or newer device will see the “Google Fi VPN” replaced by the built-in “VPN by Google” feature. This change, which started with the Pixel 8 and extended to other devices like the Pixel Tablet last year, is being rolled out to ensure a more seamless experience for users.

As of May 22, VPN controls will be moved to the device’s settings, according to a notice in the Fi app’s Privacy & Security section. A new “Manage VPN in Settings” option will replace the on/off toggle. VPN by Google, which is updated through the Play Store, offers a more integrated experience, including a Quick Settings Tile for easy activation or deactivation.
