Hackers recently tried to break into the email accounts of several Washington Post journalists, according to an internal memo obtained by CNN.
The attempted breach was discovered last Thursday. In response, The Post reset login credentials for all employees on Friday, Washington Post Executive Editor Matt Murray told staff in a memo on Sunday.
“Although our investigation is ongoing, we believe the incident affected a limited number of Post journalists’ accounts, and we have contacted those whose accounts have been impacted,” Murray said.
He added that no other Post systems were affected and that the attack did not impact customers.
It is not yet clear who was behind the hacking attempt. Journalists often face cyber threats from state-backed spies who want to monitor their reporting or from cybercriminals seeking to extort media outlets.
When asked who might be responsible, a spokesperson for The Post declined to comment.
The Wall Street Journal first reported on the hacking attempt. The Journal itself was the target of a years-long hacking campaign, likely by Chinese hackers, which came to light in 2022. That effort focused on reporters covering China-related issues.
