Srinagar: Authorities in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, have issued a warning against the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) following the recent Pahalgam terror attack. The use of VPNs was suspended by the district magistrate on May 7, in a move aimed at curbing unlawful online activities.
The ban was imposed for two months after reports indicated widespread use of VPNs to access websites and content that had been blocked by the central government following the deadly attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives.
Local police have noted that some VPN services continue to be used despite the ban. Officials explained that VPNs help users hide their IP addresses and bypass website restrictions, making them vulnerable to cyberattacks. The encrypted data transmitted through VPNs can also be used for illegal activities, such as spreading inflammatory content or inciting unrest.
To protect against potential cyber threats, authorities urged residents to refrain from using VPNs. They warned that continued use could result in legal consequences for individuals involved.
